IBM’s Workplace Client Technology Micro Edition (WCTME) CD is included with this development kit with a 90 day evaluation license. WCTME in a complete integrated application development environment targeting embedded platforms. It includes the application frameworks used in the RFID Device Infrastructure as well as a complete J2ME development environment. Using the application framework based on OSGi customers can develop “plug-in” bundles and then use the integrated bundle server to download and test new OSGi bundles on the target Edge Controller hardware.

The demand for high speed wireless connectivity within embedded OEM applications continues to grow at an impressive rate. To meet this demand, the embedded Linux image used on the VIPER now includes support for IEEE 802.11b CompactFlash cards based on the PRISM chipset (with the ability to define the 128-bit WEP keys using a configuration file).

Arcom uses RedBoot as a simple, fast, reliable mechanism for initialising the VIPER and loading the embedded Linux image into the onboard Flash. Arcom’s team of experienced in-house developers is available to provide free support as you integrate your own application software.

Arcom recognises that Linux is used extensively in deeply embedded solutions and that secure communications is an important part of any application involved in control and monitoring functions. Many users of telnet, rlogin and ftp may not realise that password information is transmitted across the Internet unencrypted. Arcom uses OpenSSH to encrypt all traffic (including passwords) to effectively eliminate eavesdropping and other network-level attacks.

The Development Kit also includes the option of installing embedded Java technology implemented with the IBM J2ME VM and includes the WebSphere Studio Device Developer (WSDD) IDE tools for embedded Java development. These optional technologies have been optimised for use on the VIPER hardware platform and can be quickly installed into the embedded Flash.
